Mary Alice Carpenter
Mary Alice knows that new parenthood is full of paradoxes. You’re exhausted, but you can’t sleep. You love your baby, but it’s hard to like someone who screams at you all day. You need help, but you don’t know who to ask or what to ask for. Finding support and taking care of yourself is a great first step– healthy parents grow healthy families. Therapy is a safe place to sort through your scary thoughts and tap into your inner-strengths and resources.
Mary Alice’s expertise in working with expecting and new parents in the Houston area spans the length of a decade, first as a birth and postpartum doula, and later as a midwife (LM, CPM). Although she loved supporting moms in their birth choices, she felt most in tune fostering the mental health of her patients: holding space for losses, listening to worries, and providing pragmatic resources for the everyday struggles of new parenthood. This led Mary Alice to make a shift from midwife to therapist, earning her MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, with a focus in perinatal mental health to continue her work with new mothers and families.
Mary Alice is a member of Postpartum Support International and has specialized training in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. She has additional training in Internal Family Systems therapy and is Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 1 certified. Mary Alice is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist - Associate practicing under the supervision of CPFH Associate Director, Kim Jones, M.A., LMFT-S.
